Abstract:

The present invention relates to an improved stripping machine for removing insulation from flat cable wherein, the cable has a plurality of conductors positioned in substantially the same plane. The instant machine includes a frame having a pair of arms movably and pivotally mounted on the frame. A grinding wheel is rotatably mounted on each of the arms. One of the grinding wheels has a larger diameter than the other grinding wheel. An adjustment device is connected to the arms for simultaneously positioning the grinding wheels relative to the conductors. The arms with the grinding wheels are movable in a direction transverse to a length of flat cable to remove insulation from the cable. The wheels move in opposite directions at the positions where the wheels engage opposite sides of the cable. Drive rollers are mounted on the frame for pulling the cable along the length of the cable and along the length of the table mounted on the frame.

Abstract:

There is disclosed herein an apparatus for applying electrical connector sections to a flat multiconductor cable. The apparatus includes a multiconductor cable, and a connector station which includes two connector applying sections. Each section includes a connector supplying magazine or feed for delivering a connector section from the supply magazine to tooling which receives the connector section. Air cylinders advance the tooling to the cable for securement of the connectors thereto and retract the tooling from the connector receiving position. A pair of outlet valves are associated with each pneumatic cylinder and air discharge lines extend between one of the valves and the connector termination position and the other of the valves and the connector magazine feed for selectively discharging air into the magazine as the tooling is extended and for discharging air toward the connector termination position as the valving is retracted so as to enhance free movement of the connector sections in the magazine and release the connectors from the tooling at the connector terminating position.

Abstract:

An improved machine for applying electrical connectors to electrically conductive cable, such as multi-conductor flat cable. The machine includes a pair of opposed tool members, each of which include a shelf-like recess for receiving a connector portion. The cable is positioned between the tool members which are advanced toward each other for staking the connector body portion to the cable and receiving the connector cap to the connector body, and thus securing the connector to the cable. In each tool member the shelf-like recess is formed from a shelf which is slidably mounted to the tool member and biased to an outward position. When the shelf engages the cable and other tool member, it retracts and the tool member urges the connector onto the cable. Upon retraction of the tool member, the shelf is biased to its extended position.

Abstract:

There is disclosed herein an apparatus for applying an electrical connector to a multiconductor cable. The apparatus includes a supply means for carrying and dispensing flat multiconductor cable. A drive receives cable from the supply and delivers the cable to a connector applying station. The connector applying station includes spaced sections for receiving connector sections and advancing and applying the connector section to the cable. A drive is mounted in a housing in a position between the supply and connector applying section. There is further provided an entry guide positioned between the supply and drive roller for laterally applying cable delivered to the cable received by the drive. Exit guide means positioned between the drive rollers and connector applying sections engage the cable and accurately laterally positioning the same.

Abstract:

The machine is designed for the semi-manual preparation of a portion of an insulated and electrically shielded multi-conductor cable (12) for receiving a connector thereon. The machine (10) includes a holder (72) for receiving a portion (14) of the cable (12), a die assembly (96) for cutting off at least one side edge portion of the cable (12) to create at least one set back edge portion (20) in alignment with at least one conductor (15A) in the cable (12) adjacent the set back edge portion (20), a grinding wheel (52) for removing an insulating surface coating (30) of the cable (12) situated above an electrical shield (34) in the cable (12) and laterally of the set back edge portion (20) to expose a strip (32) of shield (34), and a scoring blade (64) for scoring the strip (32) of electrical shield (34) adjacent one edge (36) of the strip (32). The method comprises the steps of: cutting off at least one side edge portion of the cable (12) to create the at least one set back edge portion (20) in a desired alignment with respect to at least one conductor (15A) in the cable (12) adjacent the set back edge portion (20); removing the insulating surface coating (30) to expose the strip (32) of electrical shield (34) extending laterally of the cable (12); scoring the strip (32) of electrical shield (34) adjacent the one edge (36) of the strip (32); and breaking the strip (32) of electrical shield (34) away from the cable (12) at the scoring line (36).

Abstract:

A method and apparatus is provided for attaching a plurality of two-piece connectors of varying configuration to a specified length of multi-conductor cable at precise locations along the length of the cable and in any sequence of connector attachment. A device is provided for storing and downwardly advancing a precise length of cable, cutting one end of the cable at a cutter station, and locating the cable between a connector assembly station where a pair of connector halfs are automatically attached to the cable at a precise, predetermined location. The cable is then laterally moved to one or more connector assembly stations where one or more additional connectors are attached to the cable. The cable is then moved back to the cutter station where the cable is cut flush against the top of the last connector to be attached to the cable. All drive and movement functions of the apparatus are controlled by a pre-programmed microprocessor.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for injection molding a connector cover half of a connector staked to a flat multiconductor cable are disclosed, which injection molding is carried out by reciprocating an injection molding device toward and away from the cable and staking connector half diametrically opposite the injection molding device. Appropriate thermoplastic resin is chosen as the injection molding material, such that its melting temperature is lower than the softening temperature of the plastic of the staking connector half, so that when the front face of the staking connector serves as the front wall sealing off the die cavity of the injection molding device, no deformation of the staking connector half occurs. The forming die of the device may be either air cooled or water cooled, or both, to speed hardening and to prevent deformation of the staking connector half.
