An improved clamp for nonmetallic rope has a plug formed with an annular collar at one end and a plurality of tapered segments formed integrally with the collar and extending outwardly therefrom. The plug has a hollow axial bore defined by a serrated cylindrical surface to increase the gripping effect on a rope telescopically inserted into the bore. The plug is telescopically inserted into the tapered bore of an outer sleeve which compresses the tapered segments of the plug against the rope. The length of the plug is at least ten times greater than the diameter of its bore, which in combination with the annular collar, provides an increased clamping pressure between the serrated surfaces of the tapered segments and the rope throughout the length of the plug. The outer tapered surfaces of the plug segments and the internal bore of the sleeve has a low friction, corrosion resistant coating applied thereto whereby the axial component of the wedging force between the plug and sleeve will be less than the axial component of the friction force between the rope and plug bore preventing slipping of the rope from within the plug bore. The angle of taper of the plug is approximately 4. degree.
A security lock for retaining a weapon in a storage rack can be operated either electrically by a remote switch or mechanically by a key. The weapon is locked to a main body by a lid which is pivotally mounted by a hinge and pivot pin on the body. The plunger of a solenoid extends into a slot formed in the pivot pin preventing it from rotating when the lid is in a locked position and the solenoid deenergized. A key actuated detent locks the pivot pin to the lid when the detent is in key locked position. Actuation of the solenoid retracts the plunger permitting the lid to pivot to open position without operating the key operated detent which maintains the pivot pin locked to the lid. Retraction of the key operated detent unlocks the pivot pin from the lid to enable the pivot pin to be slid axially along the hinge to disengage the solenoid plunger from the pivot pin slot permitting the lid to move to open position without energizing the solenoid.
This invention provides an improved cable clamp construction for telecommunication cables such as coaxial cables made from continuous filaments of optical glass fibers which are surrounded by an annulus of aramid material and contained within an outer plastic jacket. In order to provide intermediate gripping action on the continuous cable without its interruption, the gripping action must be carefully controlled and distributed over a relatively sizable intermediate area of the cable to prevent damage to the fragile fibers of the cable over a long useful life in varying climatic conditions. The gripping clamp is comprised of a limited number of components which are capable of surrounding and gripping the cable without undue flexure, the clamp being comprised essentially of a separable sleeve member and a separable plug member, both of which have tapered surfaces to positively secure the cable with compressive forces over a localized area. The complementarily tapered components of the sleeve and plug permit an increased gripping action on the cable without damage thereto for maintaining the cable in permanent tension between a pair of supporting points with an un-tensioned intermediate area of the cable retained between an adjacent pair of supporting points. The separable sleeve and plug members of the clamp firmly grip the cable, in distributed compression greater than the amount of tension.
An improved end clamp and method for attachment to a light-weight, manipulatable readily-grasped composite line of relatively high strength for use by personnel involved in hazardous rescue or safety conditions. The clamp and its method of attachment may be used with a multi-layered composite rope comprised of several combined sheaths of plastic materials with or without a multi-strand central metallic core. The clamp is particularly useful with a static composite rope having very little stretch and which will withstand exposure to elevated temperatures, sharp objects, chemicals, sunlight or shock which do not produce failure in the rope or require its premature disposal. The clamp is relatively simple in construction and provides a pair of interlocking tapered metallic elements which may be quickly attached to the rope end to withstand an unusual amount of strain or loading equal to or greater than the actual breaking strength of the rope itself.
This invention relates to a rope clamp and method of connecting to such clamp an end portion of a composite rope. Such rope has a multi-strand metallic core surrounded by a plurality of inner and outer sheaths of fibrous plastic material, the rope being one which is capable of use by rescue workers, firemen, mountaineers and the like. It is also useful in military and marine applications. The end clamp utilizes a hollow threaded sleeve and first and second tapered wedging plugs for separate connections of the plastic sheaths and metallic core to the rope for permanent and durable end termination.
An improved end clamp for a multi-strand aramid rope has an outer sleeve formed with an internal bore having a taper of between 11/4 degrees and 13/4 degrees. A tapered wedging plug having a taper of between 21/4 degrees and 23/4 degrees is inserted into the sleeve bore and compresses separated equi-spaced strands of the rope therebetween in essentially tangential contact. An annular clearance space is formed between the larger end of the sleeve bore and the larger end of the tapered plug and has an area substantially equal to or slightly less than the area of the aramid material of the rope whereby the separated strands of the rope are in abutting engagement throughout the annular clearance space to increase the holding capability of the clamp. The ratio of the tapered plug length to the diameter of the uncompressed rope varies from about 9 to 1 and 11 to 1.
