Police major Charles Guess said at a briefing that the search had shifted north after investigators found refuse left behind by Matt and Sweat, and that they suspected the pair had been trying to make it to the Canadian border some 70 miles away.
The fugitives had taken some items from the cabins that might assist them in their travels, and left some items behind, which the police have recovered and sent to a forensics lab for testing, said Maj. Charles Guess of the state police.
More than 1,000 police officers have descended on a 75-square-mile area near the prison after New York State Police Maj. Charles Guess cited with "virtually 100% assurance" that that Sweat, 35, and Matt, who turned 49 Thursday, had been in a local cabin last weekend.
