nd its another way to show the push pull of the traditional, social norms - a singer, at dinner, the horror! - versus the need to adapt to the times - why wouldn't a renowned singer dine with the party guest. Butler Charles Carson is aghast that the singer should be seated with the party guests. RCharles Carson, the butler, is (shocker) unnerved by change - such as fewer maids brought by the guests, putting greater strain on the Downtown staff. Its not like life before the war, he observes.
