Abstract:

Methods and systems are disclosed for initiating oxygen scavenging in an angular preformed packaging article comprising an oxygen scavenging layer. The packaging article is moved into and out of a chamber, in which it is exposed to UV radiation of at least about 280 nm. The wavelength of UV radiation to which the article is exposed can be selected so that it will be absorbed by the oxygen scavenging layer as efficiently as possible, taking into account the composition of the oxygen scavenging layer and any additional layers that are present.

Herein are disclosed metal oleate, especially cobalt oleate, masterbatch compositions useful in preparing oxygen scavenging packaging articles, as well as methods of making the masterbatch compositions. In one embodiment, the masterbatch comprises porous beads comprising a first polymer; the metal oleate dispersed in the porous beads; and a second polymer a photoinitiator, in powder form, dispersed on the exteriors of the porous beads. In another embodiment, the masterbatch comprises a metal oleate and a polymer, wherein the metal oleate is in the form of pellets or, a powder, and the polymer is in thug form of a powder dispersed on the exteriors of the pellets or powder. In still another embodiment the masterbatch is prepared from a composition comprising a metal oleate and a polymer, wherein the polymer is in the form of a container and the metal oleate is contained within the container.

Abstract:

A multi-layer film with barrier properties having two or more layers made from a bio-based film is disclosed. In one aspect, the print web comprises a bio-based film. In one aspect, the barrier web comprises a bio-based film. In one aspect, a bio-based adhesive adheres the print web to the barrier web. The bio-based film can include paper, PCR, polylactide or polyhydroxy-alkanoate. Unlike prior art petroleum-based films, the bio-based film of the present invention is made from a renewable resource and is biodegradable.
