    A precision accelerometer is provided which is capable of measuring linear accelerations along three axes. The accelerometer incorporates a self-charging radioactive particle as the inertial acceleration sensing mass. The particle is contained in an evacuated cubical chamber, and the position of the particle within the chamber is established by the differential between the mean number of emitted charged particles detected at the opposite walls of the chamber, whenever the particle moves from a central position within the chamber. The accelerometer includes an electronic control system which generates feedback signals that tend to maintain the particle centered within the chamber in the presence of accelerations, and at the same time to provide electrical outputs which are measurements of the accelerations along the three coordinate axes.

    The present invention operates on the principle that the velocity vector of a land-vehicle is along the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The invention uses an odometer in conjunction with a set of three single axis rate gyros strapped down to the vehicle to provide a land vehicle navigation system. The single axis rate gyros are rigidly mounted to the body with input axes parallel to a set of reference axes in the vehicle. By means of these gyros it is possible to infer the heading of the vehicle and thereby achieve a navigation accuracy comparable to the accuracy that the same gyros would provide in a gimballed system, but without the necessity for the set of gimbals.

    An electrical circuit interposed between the pickoffs and torquers of a two-axis gyroscope. The circuit output controls the torquers. When the pickoff signals vary at the nutation frequency, the angular accelerations produced by the torquers damp the nutation. No angular accelerations are produced when the pickoff signals are not varying and only negligible angular accelerations are produced when the pickoff signals vary at a frequency other than the nutation frequency.
