A satellite-based communications system operating at high data rates includes a plurality of satellites each having uplink and downlink antennas for transmitting and receiving a plurality of signal utilizing a plurality of spot beams to and from a plurality of coverage areas at a predetermined range of frequencies. The system also includes a plurality of user terminals for transmitting and receiving signals to and from the plurality of communications satellites at the predetermined range of frequencies and at one of the first plurality of data rates. Each of the user terminals having a steerable antenna for tracking relative movement of each of the user terminals with respect to each of the plurality of communications satellites are for tracking movement of each of the plurality of communications satellites in order to maintain communications with the plurality of communications satellite.

A method and apparatus for mitigating communications interference between satellite communications systems in different orbits is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of evaluating a geometrical relationship between a second ground station and the satellites in the second satellite constellation, and directing communications between the second ground station and the second satellite according to the evaluated geometrical relationship. In one embodiment communications are handed over from a first satellite to another satellite when the first satellite is no longer at the highest elevation angle of visible satellites. In another embodiment, handover occurs when the first satellite drops below a minimum elevation angle.

The plurality of satellites operate in a service area in a synchronized manner to provide continuous coverage to the service area. The satellites generate a plurality of beams with variable beamwidths to obtain a substantially uniform cell size covering the service area. A user terminal within the service area receives communication signals from the satellite.
System And Method For Continuous Broadcast Service From Non-Geostationary Orbits
A method, apparatus for providing at least near continuous broadcast services to one or more terrestrial receiver stations is disclosed. The system comprises a plurality of satellites, each satellite in an inclined, elliptical geosynchronous orbit, each satellite providing a portion of the at least near continuous broadcast service to the terrestrial receiver. In one embodiment, the system also comprises a receiver station having an legacy antenna modified so as to include a sensitivity pattern substantially matched to the track of the apparent position of the satellites actively broadcasting information to the receiver stations. The present invention is also embodied in a method for receiving at least near continuous broadcast service from at least one of a plurality of satellites at a time, each satellite in an inclined, elliptical, geosynchronous orbit.
A communication system has a plurality of ground stations and a plurality of satellites located in a first orbit with respect to the earth. The satellites generate a plurality of beams corresponding to a respective plurality of cell. The plurality of beams has widths that vary relative to position in the orbit to maintain a cell size of the plurality of cells. A plurality of user terminals within the cells receives communication signals from the satellite.
