Abstract:
N,Nâ-piperazinebis(neopentylglycol)phosphoramidate is used in combination with at least one co-additive which is (i) melamine, (ii) one or more melamine compounds or derivatives, or (iii) both of (i) and (ii) to provide effective flame retardancy in thermoplastic polymers. With polymers that tend to release trace amounts of acid under thermal processing conditions, a hydrotalcite is preferably included in the composition. In acid-sensitive polymers such as polyesters, the N,Nâ-piperazinebis(neopentylglycol)phosphoramidate should be free or essentially free of acid species as determinable by use of nmr, mass spec, and/or HPLC.

A flame retardant formulation which is the combination of at least (1) at least one bromine-containing polyol flame retardant formed from the reaction of (a) tetrabromophthalic anhydride, (b) an aliphatic polyol, and (c) an epoxide, and (2) at least one aliphatic diester of an alkane dicarboxylic acid, with the proviso that the formulation has a viscosity at 25 C. of about 20,000 cps or less, and a bromine content of at least about 40 wt %. A flame retardant compound formed from A) tetrabromophthalic anhydride; B) diethylene glycol; C) at least one alpha-omega alkane diol, or at least one alpha-omega alkane diol and at least one aliphatic monool; and D) at least one alkylene oxide; with the proviso that the compound has a viscosity at 25 C. of about 60,000 cps or less, and a bromine content of at least about 43 wt %. Polymer compositions formed from (a) a polyurethane or a polyisocyanurate and (b) a formulation of the invention.

Abstract:
Provided are new flame retardants and liquid flame retardant additive compositions of low viscosity for use in flexible polyurethane foams. The new flame retardants are the reaction product of at least one brominated aromatic diester diol with at least one alcohol-reactive agent. Preferred liquid flame retardant additive compositions are capable of minimizing visible scorching of the foam during its production. Flexible flame retardant polyurethane foams and methods for their production are also provided. The flame retardant additive compositions are formed at least from a) at least one reaction product of a brominated aromatic diester diol and an alcohol-reactive agent; b) at least one hindered amine antioxidant; and c) at least one phenolic antioxidant in which the phenolic ring is substituted by an alkanoic acid alkyl ester group in which alkanoic acid moiety has in the range of 2 to about 4 carbon atoms and the alkyl group has in the range of about 6 to about 16 carbon atoms.

Abstract:
A fiber or filament which is formed from ingredients comprising (a) at least one fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer and (b) at least one polybrominated anionic styrenic polymer is provided. The polybrominated anionic styrenic polymer has a bromine content of at least about 50 wt %, and a GPC weight average molecular weight in the range of about 5000 to about 40,000, or a GPC weight average molecular weight of at least about 600,000. When the fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer is a polyester, the polybrominated anionic styrenic polymer is present in a flame resistant or flame retardant amount. When the fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer is a polyamide, the polybrominated anionic styrenic polymer is at least about 2 wt % of the fiber or filament. When the fiber-forming thermoplastic polymer is a polyolefin, at least one synergist is present and the polybrominated anionic styrenic polymer is no more than about 15 wt % of the fiber or filament.

Abstract:
Solid-state highly brominated compounds such as solid brominated flame retardants with bromine contents of at least about 60 wt % often contain occluded bromine. Because of their high bromine contents, such compounds have relatively low solubility in common organic solvents. Despite this low solubility, the content of occluded bromine in such solid brominated compounds is effectively reduced by agitating a concentrated agitated slurry of the compound in an inert solvent at a suitable temperature for at least about 1 hour. Thereafter, solids with reduced content of occluded bromine are isolated or recovered from the slurry. Novel products having substantially reduced or eliminated occluded bromine contents and other very desirable characteristics are also provided.
