Abstract:
An automatic remote control device and method which compensates for ambient, environmental noise changes and sudden changes in program material volume. The microphones and circuitry associated with the volume control apparatus are located in an autonomous, preferably portable, remote control unit that will work with any existing audio/video device that is configured to respond to a remote control input. In one embodiment, the remote control device comprises a microprocessor, at least one directional microphone for receiving a sound level emitted from a sound-emitting device, and at least one omni-directional microphone for receiving the total noise level in the vicinity of the remote control device. The microprocessor located in the remote control device utilizes the received sound level and the total received noise level to calculate a reference sound-to-noise ratio. If a volume up/down control is pressed by the operator, the remote control device sends the appropriate signal to the sound-emitting device to increase or decrease the sound level, and a new reference sound-to-noise ratio is calculated.

Abstract:
A communication system selection algorithm (SSA) implemented by a mobile station chooses between available systems to select a system to serve the mobile station. During initialization, the SSA causes the mobile station to scan the environment and compare available communication systems to determine the best system to provide service. After an initial system is chosen, the SSA causes the mobile station to continuously, or at discrete time intervals, scan the environment for available systems, thus allowing for a seamless switch to an available system whenever a handoff is desired. The SSA chooses the best available system based on measurements of each available system and applying preference rules defined by a service provider and/or user of the mobile station.

Abstract:
In the method, a source base station sends first information to a target base station. The first information indicates a sequence number of a first data unit in a sequence of data units undelivered to the mobile station by the source base station. The source base station also sends the target base station second information. The second information indicates data units, after the first undelivered data unit in the sequence, that have been delivered to the mobile station by the source base station. The second information may further indicate portions of the first undelivered data unit that have been delivered to the mobile station by the source base station.

Abstract:
A method and equipment is used to transmit and/or receive time delay-intolerant information over a communication system. The information is transmitted in aggregated form. A plurality of packets representing time delay-intolerant information is combined to form an aggregate packet. The aggregate packet is formed based on user service requirements while maintaining time delay requirements of the information. The size of the aggregated is formed from a negotiation between the transmitting equipment and receiving equipment. Because of the use of an aggregated packet less scheduling of packets is done and the aggregated packet can be transmitted at a rate different than the fixed rate of the time delay-intolerant information. The equipment comprises transmit equipment and receive equipment. The transmit equipment contains an aggregator that combines a plurality of packets based on user service requirements.

Abstract:
An active session mobility solution for radio link protocol (RLP) in accordance with the present invention defines two RLP migrations states. A first state is defined as a forward-link RLP state and depicts the communication of data from a home agent to an access terminal in an IP network. A second state is defined as a reverse-link RLP state and depicts the communication of data from the access terminal to the home agent in the IP network. In one embodiment of the seamless active session mobility solution for RLP in accordance with the present invention, a two-stage RLP transfer process for the migration of the two defined states from a source to a target is implemented. In a first stage, the forward-link RLP state is transferred from a source to a target. In a second stage, frame selection and the reverse-link RLP are transferred from the source to the target.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of operating a first base station router. The method may include transmitting state information associated with at least one inactive mobile unit to at least one second base station router. The state information is usable to initiate an active session with the at least one inactive mobile unit. The first base station router retains the state information for initiating an active session with the at least one inactive mobile unit and the least one second base station router is capable of initiating an active session with the at least one inactive mobile unit based on the state information when the state information is unavailable to the first base station router.
